Difference between words and characters?
« on: June 21, 2018, 09:34:01 AM »
Hello noobs, i just find this educative and i would like to share this with you all. Anytime you are tasked in a signature campaign to make at least 80 characters what it really means is that you are to make a post which sums up to 80 alphabets or letters and not words. Sometimes noobs find it really scary when they are tasked to make a post of that number. Good luck in your signature campaigns and never forget to ask anything you don't understand about this forum because we are here to help you.

Thanks for sharing this. I remember my first time of participating in a signature campaign, this very thing you have thrown light on, nearly scared me away.

To share some -- when writing in Chinese, one character is equal to one word in English. When we say one word in Chinese, it can be one word in English, or 2, or 3, but usually no more than 4. For example, an idiomatic word consisting of 4 characters, but each of these 4 characters is equal to one word in English. We never describe alphabetical letters, punctuation.. as characters, they're just symbols in Chinese Language.

Oh, yeah, if you say a post must contain at least 80 characters or sometimes the requirement is 150 characters, it sounds much scarier to our Chinese users, lolll, literally it means over 80 or 150 words in English, so each post is like to write a short article. lolllll TOUGH!  ;D

I hope people truly know there's a difference between a signature campaign and a bounty campaign? The first is a campaign that rewards participants in bitcoin while the other pays in altcoins.

Now back to the OP, in computer parlance, words are letters (and sometimes a single letter) while characters could also be letters and space. Example in, I am great, it contains three words. But we have 10 characters in it.

Sorry, where did you get this definition that ''a signature campaign is a campaign that rewards participants in bitcoin while the others pays in altcoins''? This is my first time ever heard of this.

The second part, yes, it makes sense in English, and Ikkelins has already clarified it on the first comment. But usually space won't be counted when doing calculation in bounty programs.

I would say this thread is quite educative. The amount of words in bounties are actually in alphabets but being coherent when put together. Nice thread.

Simple but helpful. In english word, each words contains characters like numbers, letters or symbols combined together and create a word. Newbies should keep this in mind that characters and words are different, In general, a "character" is any mark or symbol that can appear in writing. A "letter" is a character that is part of an alphabet. Basically, a character that represents a sound in the language and that can be combined with other characters to form words.

Does it really do not understand someone. After all, there is a difference between a word and a symbol. Only a foreigner can confuse.

I am glad you appreciate it because sometimes most crpto noobs confuse themselves with the number of characters and words. Wish everybody in here the very best in their signature campaign.

words are just the complete group of letters with a meaning. Characters are just single letters or symbols. In digital writing, spaces are even counted as characters.
